Hi there! I’m Jessica Navarro, an Assistant Professor in Human Service Studies at Elon University. I received my PhD from the Human Development and Family Studies at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where I also earned an MS in HDFS. I received my MSW from the Brown School of Social Work and Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis and a BA in Public Health from Brown University.
My theorizing, research and writing are focused upon Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory, neo-ecological theory, technology and families, parent-child relationships, adolescent well-being and gratitude.
I grew up as a “third culture kid,” living across five continents during my childhood and adolescence, which has shaped my perspective and curiosity. When I’m not engaged in research or teaching, I love spending time outdoors with my three children and our pets in the forests of North Carolina. I’m also an avid tennis player and an amateur watercolorist, finding joy in balancing active pursuits with creative and intellectual passions.
